St. Cecilia Academy students have opportunities throughout the school year to pursue their passions in the arts on campus, and some use the summer break to continue growing their skills with experts in their fields. We asked junior Julia Betbeze about her summer at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan.
“This summer, I attended Interlochen Arts Camp for the Vocal Opera intensive,” said Julia. “Interlochen is well known in the arts world, so I had heard about it and decided to look into what it took to apply.” Each program has its own set of audition or portfolio requirements as part of the rigorous application process. She was encouraged by her voice teacher, knowing that it would help her grow vocally. During this three-week program, she spent her days learning not only vocal technique but also theory, music history, movement, opera scene work, and developing her classical voice. In addition to private voice lessons, the curriculum included acting, choir, music history, music theory and aural skills, opera repertoire, and opera workshop. She called the instructors “amazing.”
“While there, I met many passionate students, made new friends, and improved exponentially,” she shared. “There were many performance opportunities, and the culmination of the program was the opera scenes performance, where we performed segments from different operas.” Julia mentioned that she loved the mix of music, being outside, and participating in other activities. She especially liked being in a cabin with fellow artists who were participating in other Interlochen programs. “I had an amazing cabin experience. Everyone in my cabin was in different programs, so it was great to hear what those programs were like.”
She credited her first St. Cecilia voice teacher, Stephanie Nolan, for preparing and inspiring her. “I learned so much from her,” she said. She also mentioned the opportunities in the Fine Arts department at SCA, which gave her experiences that helped improve her singing abilities. The bonds of sisterhood were also an influence. “Some older St. Cecilia students in fine arts encouraged me to pursue music.”
Julia encourages others to apply for Interlochen Arts Camp, even if they are unsure about their acceptance into the program. “I would tell them to go ahead and apply because you will truly improve so much.” She also advises, “I would encourage SCA students to take advantage of the arts opportunities at school and encourage them to try out for anything they want to do.”
Thank you, Julia Betbeze, for sharing your summer story with us!
