Growing as an Athlete with Amelia Hood '29

St. Cecilia Academy coaches encourage student-athletes to explore sport-specific opportunities throughout the school year and during breaks. The time spent in strength and conditioning sessions and skill-building clinics reap positive dividends during the season, while enhancing the virtues of fortitude, self-discipline, and resilience. We asked freshman Amelia Hood about her summer at the NIKE Smoky Mountain Running Camp.
“At the end of last year's track season, Coach Alexis sent us an email about various running camps, one of which was the NIKE running camp,” explained Amelia, who was a St. Cecilia eighth grader at the time. “This one sounded interesting to me and was located in Asheville, NC, which was close and easy to get to.”  The NIKE Smoky Mountain Running Camp emphasizes the training philosophy developed by the late University of Oregon Coach and NIKE Co-Founder Bill Bowerman. Each runner is placed in a group based on their individual pace, current fitness level, overall ability, and general goals.

Amelia trained with top collegiate coaches and heard from guest speakers who are running experts and athletes. “Each day was packed with morning and afternoon runs, guest speakers, and lots of workshops in between,” she said. Amelia is grateful for her coaches at St. Cecilia. “I am thankful for my cross country and track season at SCA, as I felt well prepared for my daily 7-to-9-mile runs.”

The running tested her endurance but improved her time and confidence, while the presentation sessions and camaraderie made the Camp even more rewarding. “I gained so much from the guest speakers and workshops, but the best part was meeting new people and making new friends,” she shared. “If someone is considering the NIKE camp, I would tell them to definitely do it, because you will become a better runner and have a fun experience.”

Thank you, Amelia Hood, for sharing your summer story with us!
