Anna Huber (’22) Attends Virtual Governor’s School for International Studies
Anna Huber (’22) applied to the Governor’s School of International Studies (GSIS) because “I wanted to see if work in an international field was a potential career path for me.” Students selected for Governor’s School earn college credit. Typically, the program meets on a Tennessee college campus, but due to the pandemic, this year’s Governor’s School program went virtual. As Anna shared, “Our class takes place every day on Zoom from 9 am to 11 am. Then we break for lunch and come back to our language classes from noon to 1 pm. In the evenings we have community engagement opportunities with different speakers and discussions.”

Anna loves learning about new cultures. Because she hopes to travel to an Arabic-speaking country, she was excited to be selected for her top-choice language cohort: Arabic. Faced with a new alphabet and new symbols, Anna says, “The experience of learning this language has been difficult. I have enjoyed the challenge, though, and would like to continue to learn it.” Her favorite topics thus far include universal human rights and cross-cultural communication. In response to the virtual format of this course Anna explains, “I have made connections with people all over the state, even in the virtual setting. I think that this opportunity is great to learn more and to gauge [my] interest in International Studies.”
