St. Thomas Aquinas says that eutrapelia — the virtue of smiling, laughing, and having fun — can actually bring us closer to God. The happiness of sharing conversation and laughs with good friends, the satisfaction of an assignment or performance well done, the camaraderie that results when individuals grow together as a class, a team, or a troupe: all of these occasions radiate authentic joy.
