Dominican Dads deliver strong turn-out

Nashville, Tenn. (August 30, 2017)—On Wednesday, August 30, a crowd of men streamed through halls typically reserved for girls only, as dads turned out in force for the Dominican Dads 2017-2018 kick-off event at St. Cecilia Academy. Over 60 men from St. Cecilia, Overbrook, and surrounding parishes and schools came together to enjoy good food and fellowship while also getting serious about their vocation as husbands and fathers. "What dad doesn't want to get better in his role as a husband and father?" quipped Billy Alexander, a parent of Overbrook School. "And enjoying good barbeque and beer with other like-minded guys doesn't hurt!"

After dinner Father John Raphael, chaplain of St. Thomas Hospital, addressed the group on the topic of "Theology of the Body for Fathers," highlighting some of Pope John Paul II's profound insights on human sexuality and marriage that have become even more well-known and relevant since the saintly pontiff's death in 2005. "As a husband and father, I know I need to understand the beauty of human sexuality so that I can pass that on to my kids. I really appreciated Father John's message. It is going to help me help my daughter," said St. Cecilia dad Jim Regnier.

This year marks the fourth season for Dominican Dads, an initiative of St. Cecilia Academy to encourage fathers in their role as the spiritual heads of their families. "As a Catholic school, our mission is to support the whole family in faith—not only the young women we teach, but also their parents," said Sister Anne Catherine, principal of St. Cecilia. "Moms and dads who want to raise faithful children of strong character need support and guidance in a vocation that is so important but not always easy." Getting moms and dads together, whether for retreats, faith-sharing groups, lectures, or other occasions, is something that St. Cecilia considers a priority.

During the school year, Dominican Dads meet every Friday morning from 6-7:30 a.m. at St. Cecilia Academy. The meetings begin in prayer with Eucharistic adoration in the SCA chapel, followed by a short talk and small group discussions over breakfast. The group is led by Mr. Andres Montana, vice-principal of students at St. Cecilia.
