St. Cecilia Academy ranks #1 Best Catholic High School in Tennessee for the third year in a row

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 1, 2017) — According to a new ranking of the "2017 Top Private High Schools in Tennessee," St. Cecilia Academy has been ranked the #1 Best Catholic High School in Tennessee for the third year in a row.

The website Niche, founded by Carnegie Mellon University, released the rankings earlier this month. The site used factors such as composite SAT/ACT scores, percentages of seniors who go on to four-year colleges, and parent/student surveys for the rankings. Niche maintains the most comprehensive data available on U.S. K-12 schools.

A high ranking generally indicates that:

  • Students are very happy with their school experience, including academics, teachers, and student life.
  • The school is an exceptional academic institution in terms of teachers, students, resources, and outcomes.
  • The school is made up of a diverse population and fosters an accepting, positive school culture.
  • Students are actively involved in a variety of extracurriculars and sports that the school offers.

Within a traditional structure that instills discipline, St. Cecilia offers each student a learning experience that is rigorous and flexible—designed to highlight her strengths and overcome her challenges. Hallmarks of the academic program at St. Cecilia Academy include:

  • A traditional Catholic liberal arts curriculum that emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach with a strong foundation in writing, critical reading, problem solving, and public presentation skills.
  • "Physics First" curriculum: Students study physics at the very beginning of the high school sequence as the foundation for understanding all subsequent sciences, followed by chemistry and biology.
  • Fine Arts Program: All St. Cecilia students are introduced to the fine arts through a unique multidisciplinary survey course in the freshman year that incorporates dance, theatre, speech, and the visual arts. Students are also encouraged to take additional classes in the arts and to get involved in the drama, dance, and choral programs.
  • The average class size at St. Cecilia Academy is 12 with a student-teacher ratio of 7:1. Additionally, 71% of faculty have advanced degrees.
  • St. Martin Program: St. Cecilia Academy has a dedicated Learning Specialist who coordinates individualized support for students with mild learning differences.
  • Opportunities for extended learning:
    • One Schoolhouse online learning offers additional courses for individualized needs for upperclassmen.
    • Dual Enrollment: Students interested in accelerating their academic pace have the opportunity to take college-credit courses at Aquinas College, located on the same campus with St. Cecilia.
    • Independent Study: Accelerated students may take courses with one of our faculty members designed specifically for their interests.

Principal Sister Anne Catherine, O.P. celebrated, "St. Cecilia Academy has offered an integral formation in excellence to young women for 157 years. It is always heartening when other people confirm the terrific work that goes on here every day."
