St. Cecilia Academy News
The Most Reverend David R. Choby
We mourn the loss of our beloved Nashville Bishop, Bishop David Choby, who passed away on June 3, the Vigil of Pentecost. A native of Nashville and a long-time friend of the Dominican Sisters and the Dominican Campus, Bishop Choby had several relatives who attended St. Cecilia Academy including his mother, Rita Burns Choby ‘38. His aunt, Sr. Mary Agnes Burke, O.P., was a Dominican Sister of St. Cecilia, and he attended Aquinas College before he began his studies for the priesthood. Bishop Choby developed additional Dominican allegiance after he completed his canon law degree at the Dominican-run Angelicum (University of St. Thomas) in Rome.
During his years as Bishop of Nashville, Bishop Choby faithfully visited St. Cecilia Academy several times each year, most notably for Mass on the Feast of St. Cecilia every November, as well as for Baccalaureate Mass and graduation in the spring. His steady and fatherly presence in our midst was always most welcome, and we at St. Cecilia are grateful to have known this true shepherd who watched over us and all his people with such generosity and care.
We join with the Diocese of Nashville in offering our prayers for the repose of the soul of Bishop David Choby and for the consolation of his family and friends.
