March for Life
by Betsy Brewer, class of 2012
Washington, D.C. will be flooded today with thousands of people standing up for an end to abortion and contributing to the mass crowds is 100 of our very own St. Cecilia girls. Beginning the day with a youth rally at the Verizon Center, the girls start their day right with 20,000 others all uniting for the same cause.
The march begins at the national mall and treks all the way to the Supreme Court building, making a statement that no walk is too far to be a voice for the unborn babies. Our St. Cecilia girls are speaking up for the unborn and those who don't have a voice, helping the world realize that abortion is real and it needs to be stopped.
Sister Nicholas Marie could not attend the march this year and wishes to be with the girls spiritually all day. She said, "All I can do is pray that the Holy Spirit will be with them as they march and to remember to keep them in my prayers all day."
Let us remember to keep the girls on the march in our prayers today and the rest of the trip as they march for an end to abortion.

March for Life
by Maddie Clark, class of 2012
The US Supreme Court originally passed the Roe vs Wade bill, legalizing abortion, 39 years ago in 1973. Staying true to the Catholic faith, SCA students attend the March for in Washington D.C., nearly 100 girls are attending this year. Thousands of people march to the US capital every year, exercising their first ammendment right to the freedom of speech while standing up for the right to life. The students are hosted by SCA's sister school in Maryland, Mount de Salles, where the girls sleep in the gym.
Assistant Principal of Student Affairs, Mr. La Haie, attends the march every year. "Everyone attends the March for Life for their own reasons, personally I have seen how abortion affects mothers afterward. After hearing stories of what these women gave up, it is the least we can do to stand up for what we believe."
The students will start their long 13 hour bus ride tomorrow morning and will be in Washington, D.C. until Tuesday. Not only will the girls be able to go to various events related to the march, but they will also get to go and see all there is to see in Washington. The students staying in Nashville wish their fellow classmates safe travels!

Freshman Piersen Briggs feels right at home. “There’s always a lot of focus here,” says Briggs, who got involved with the team in August. “If I am ever behind there is a coach or even an upperclassman to help me.”
Piersen says the team has been staying until 6 p.m. every day this week to organize judging slips and get everything ready for a smooth sailing tournament. Good luck to the St. Cecilia team!

SCA Mock Trial
by Lindsey Tipps, Class of 2012
Last week the SCA Mock Trial team kicked off their season. They have spent the past week going through the case and preparing to select the roles each member will play.
Last year the team competed with schools from all over Davidson County and was the only school to take home three awards.
The team earned 4th place overall, Best Defense Attorney, and Best Defense Witness.
Senior Hillary Woods is looking forward to her second year with the Mock Trial team. She said, "I like Mock Trial because I love meeting people from other schools, and it helps wih public speaking. I like being under pressure and having to think on my feet in the courtroom."
The team hopes to be just as successful in competition this year. Hillary said, "The team is going to be great this year. It seems like we have a lot of potential!"
The competition will take place in February, so look forward to updates in the future.

Forensics Tournament in Collierville
by Chloe Page, Class of 2013
This weekend the forensics team will be traveling to Collierville for the Collierville High School Tournament. On their last tournament the team placed first, so hopefully this weekend will bring in another success.
SCA will be sending nine girls, four of them being freshmen. Junior forensics member Katie Reeves thinks they will do great and fit in with the older students, "They all seem to be doing really well."
Katie will be performing humourous interpreation and a new prose piece that she is looking forward to.
With the team sending only nine girls and many larger schools attending the competition, Katie says, "We can't win with quantity, so we have to win with quality."
Good luck to the SCA forensics team this weekend!

First Mass of the Advent season
by Hannah McClure, class of 2013
Today was a significant day for Scarabs, for not only was it the first Mass in the Advent season, but the new translation of the Mass was used. While the new translation is quite different than the former, the St.Cecilia community truly grasped the new text and participated openly.
Mary Marshall Anderson noticed that throughout the Mass St.Cecilia students and faculty participated with a sense of unity and community.
She said, "At first, the new translation was a bit confusing, but towards the end everybody really seemed to understand the text. The new translation seemed to help everybody focus more on the spirit of the Mass, and it helped people stay on the same page, literally."
With positive attitudes and spiritual determination, members of the St.Cecilia community will continue to lead the Catholic Church as it progresses in the Advent season, new translation and all.

SCA participates in Model UN Conference
by Elizabeth Gobbell, class of 2012
Model United Nations took place in Murfreesboro last weekend. SCA’s 22 Model United Nation participants joined 600 students from different high schools across Tennessee for the 31st annual conference.
A short definition of what Model UN is, “you choose a country that you would like to represent and then you make a resolution for that country and try to get it passed,” said Angellena Berberich-Eerebout, a senior Model UN participant.
“I love Model UN! It is so much fun!” said Kaitlin Cockerham also a senior Model UN participant.
Model United Nations requires a lot of hard work. This year the hard work and dedication of Maggie McCurdy and Rebecca Conners really paid off. They presented a resolution on behalf of their country Yemen. Their resolution was requesting aid for Yemen’s internally displaced people. This resolution was successfully passed through the committee process requiring them to present the resolution to the 300 plus members of the General Assembly.
Way to go SCA Model United Nations participants! You all did a great job!

SCA's fine thespians have been hard at work since early September in order to prepare for their Nov. 4 debut.

Financial planning
by Hannah McClure, class of 2013
As seniors go off to college and start living by themselves, many new obstacles will come their way. From missing family and friends, to adapting to a new environment, seniors will have to learn to grow and accept new changes. However, probably the biggest challenge that seniors will have to deal with is finances. Whether seniors are buying lunch at school or purchasing a new coat, finances will become a major part of their college lives.
When Rachel Ramsey Cruze came to speak about finances with the seniors, there were mixed feelings about the talk. Would the talk be boring? Would it be engaging? Luckily, Mrs. Cruze not only made the talk exciting for the seniors, but she also gave some good tips. To begin, she suggested that if a student is unable to pay for a private college, and would have to take out loans in order to attend the college, then the senior should go to a state school to escape debt. Mrs. Cruze also noted that credit cards should be avoided, for they only attract more debt for people.
Emily Butcher got a lot out of the talk and is excited about applying these tips to her own life, "I really liked her view point on credit cards and how we should try to avoid using them as much as possible. She definitely encouraged me to start saving my money for the future!"
For SCA seniors, Mrs. Cruze's talk proved to have a positive impact on their decisions, and the talk also influenced how they will reinforce their upcoming endeavors.

Congratulations, seniors!
Today was a celebratory day for the SCArab Seniors. College is on their mind all the time, and just as a friendly reminder, a party was thrown to celebrate their application success.
Braving the Nov. 1 deadline was an accepted challenge for most of them and it has ultimately proven as a triumph.
Nearly 80% of the senior class has already applied to at least one college, while others wait to apply.
With over 300 college applications sent, Mrs. Connolly, SCA's college counselor, threw a party at break for the seniors. Of course the party was complete with ice cream 'sammies,' home made puppy chow, eclairs, donut holes, and a 'celebrate!' sign hanging in the senior lounge. Mrs. Connolly expressed how proud she was of the senior class and is preparing herself for the Nov. 15 deadline.
The seniors have made it through the first application deadline, and the next one they have to look out for is Nov. 15.

SCArab soccer
by Taylor Ely, class of 2012
After their amazing 2-0 win versus Knoxville-Webb Saturday, the St. Cecilia soccer team is doing marvelously in the regional semi-finals soccer tournament this week! The team will play Franklin Road Academy this evening at 6 p.m. at the USN field for region championship. After its last string of successes, the soccer team will either come out first or second on a regional level after its FRA game, and qualified to head to the sub-state tournament on Saturday. This means the team could win state! The girls are all very excited about this monumental step for St. Cecilia.
Lucy Burt raved, “This is the first time SCA has been able to host a sub-state game, which says a lot about how much we’ve grown not only as a team, but as a school.”
Many players are not only thrilled about the physical record-breakings of the team, but of the emotional ones as well.
“I feel so much closer to this team than I ever have before,” said Caroline Wehby. “I feel very confident in our potential to place well at state.”
With the amount that St. Cecilia girls are accomplishing these days, who knows what else is on the horizon!
Documentation on Images of Women in Media to be Screened
Lipscomb University's HumanDocs film series presents two opportunities to see the feature documentary "Miss Representation." Premiering at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, the film takes a hard look at how media -- news, TV, commercials -- distort the image of women, seeing them as important for their appearance, not who they are as people. "Miss Representation," the movie's website reads, "exposes how American youth are being sold the concept that women and girls’ value lies in their youth, beauty and sexuality. It’s time to break that cycle of mistruths."
The film screens Monday, Oct. 24, 6:30 p.m., in room 301 of Lipscomb's Ezell Center, then Wednesday, Oct. 26, 8:30p.m., in Ward Hall. Both buildings are on the Belmont Boulevard side of campus. Brief panel discussions follow both screenings, and both showings are free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Ted Parks, ted.parks@lipscomb.edu, 966-6616.

St. Cecilia welcomes visitors
by Elizabeth Donlon, class of 2012
Today has been a day of hool-a-hoops, harps and how-are-yous in the hallways of St. Cecilia. We started off our morning right with a pep rally in the gym to welcome our eighth grade visitors and celebrate our athletic victories.
At the pep rally, the visitors got to participate in an array of different activites including making a tunnel for the athletes to run through as well as doing the cha cha slide with their new Scarab friends.
The eighth graders spent the rest of the morning sitting in on classes, attending a fine arts assembly, and getting a feel for St. Cecilia.
Ambassador Rachel Duff said, "The eighth graders love lunch because it gives them a chance to talk to the students and get to know them."
The visitors had a very successful Scarab day, which began and ended with smiles. Rachel said, "The girls were fantastic and before they left they gave us all hugs."

Soccer team supports fellow teammate
by Lindsey Tipps, class of 2012
What started out as an exciting soccer game turned upsetting for one SCArab player and her teammates. Sophomore Bethany Higgins collided with Harpeth Hall's goalie.
Unfortunately, Bethany's face is severely bruised. Today all of her teammates painted black under their eyes to help encourage the support of Bethany.
Freshman Allison Hassett said, "We wanted to show our support for Bethany and unite as a team."
This is a great example of the love that St. Cecilia girls have for each other. Having just one injured player has given the team the opportunity to come together as a group to show that they care for her.
Feel better soon, Bethany!

Jessica Deal, class of 2013, is going to take a campus tour at UT Knoxville this weekend. Jessica said, "I've been there many times before for football games but I'm taking this opportunity to take an official campus tour and learn more about the programs."

St. Cecilia welcomes 8th grade students for shadow days!
by Maggie Mech, class of 2013
As the deadline for next year's application approaches, prospective eighth grade students are visiting schools they are considering. SCA is so excited to welcome many for our SCArab shadow days!
Students go to classes with their ambassador, take a campus tour, have lunch, meet with all sorts of teachers and coaches, and get a real insight on the day to day life of a St. Cecilia girl. "It's really helpful to see how the school actually works," said one of the eighth graders.
Mrs. Bader, Director of Admissions for St. Cecilia Academy, oversees the planning of the shadow days. She said, "My hope for each girl is that when she is sitting in the classrooms and walking through the hallways that she can picture herself as a student here next year. It's a much more intimate setting than the big group visit days and it's a true representation of our daily life here at SCA. On behalf of the St. Cecilia community, we always like to see students visit for a shadow day and I highly encourage all interested students to give me a call and schedule a visit. Ultimately, I hope to receive their application and see them walking these halls together as St. Cecilia girls!"
Throughout the year students come to visit St. Cecilia and shadow days are a great way for girls that are seriously considering SCA to get a real feel for the school and to learn and see all the wonderful things SCA has to offer. The future is bright at SCA!

Dr. Wes Ely speaks on faith and service to the St. Cecilia community
by Hannah McClure, class of 2013
Faith, hope, and charity. While we have all heard these three words in religion class, it seems that many of us forget to apply these concepts to our daily life. For Dr. Wes Ely, however, embracing these ideas and sharing them with others is part of his mission as a doctor, father, husband and Catholic.
Dr. Ely is a professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine with subspecialty training in pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and a particular passion for care of older critically ill patients. He is also a St. Cecilia Academy dad and spoke during this week’s Women's Leadership Forum. The forums serve to assist St. Cecilia Academy students in finding what their true passions are, and how they hope to succeed in the future.
In his presentation, Dr. Ely began with the three words “faith, hope and charity.” His talk centered on his mission work in Haiti and how it brought those words to life for him. He encouraged SCA students to set priorities and build service work into their lives – whether it is mission work or simply praying for others.
Dr. Ely explained to the students the inspiration he received from the Haitians, telling them how faith-based the Haitian community remains. It was amazing, he said, how the people of Haiti never gave up in times of distress, and how they constantly had a smile upon their faces. Even though many families were broken due to the earthquake, the people of Haiti continued to worship God the Father through prayer and song.
During his speech, Dr. Ely invited his daughter Taylor Ely, an SCA senior, to the stage to talk about how much her visit to Haiti with her father changed her as a person. Taylor truly struck the hearts of the St. Cecilia community through her description of Haiti and all of the optimistic children.
Fellow SCA student Isa Aparicio came away from the speech feeling inspired and ready to serve others.
“My favorite part about the forum today was when Taylor talked about Haiti,” she said. “It was really inspiring to me because Taylor actually experienced these events first-hand, I could fully comprehend how a person could be influenced by experiencing a trip to Haiti.
“You always hear about people visiting Haiti, but when you actually know someone personally who visited and served there, it means more."
Dr. Ely’s visit struck a chord with the St. Cecilia girls. His advice on life and how to conquer it, and his advice for the students to reach out to those less fortunate, helped all to better understand how they can shape their lives around the faith.

SCArabs go to the Nashville Cultural Festival
by Reed Goodrum, class of 2013
This weekend many SCA students went to Centennial Park for the Nashville Cultural Festival. Some of the students, like Kaitlyn Dedman, went for extra credit for their language class, but others went just for the fun of the cultural experience.
"The Culture Festival is a fun and easy way to view the many nationalities of our world today," said Kaitlyn.
She visited jewelry and tribal threads booths as well as French and Native American booths. At the festival there were many performances, including traditional Native American dancing and live Jamaican music.
Kaitlyn loved the festival, "It was filled with many different cultures and assorted, but yummy, foods." Her favorite food that she tried was the Greek food and she especially liked the baklava.
Many of the students had a grand time and took many pictures for class and some just for the memories. Looking through her pictures Kaitlyn realized how diverse the United States is and that "really it is just one big melting pot."

Annual Oktober Fest celebration
by Elizabeth Gobbell, class of 2012
The German-Latin Club hosted their annual Oktober Fest celebration yesterday afternoon.
All students who participate in any language club were invited to join in the fun. The celebration began with the traditional songs sung at Ocktober Fest and then everyone ate!
There were traditional German foods at the celebration including kielbasa sausages and pretzels. Kaitlin Cockerham, a senior and a German Latin club member, said, “It was the best Ocktober Fest ever!”
With this said, it took lots of planning to get the event together. According to German-Latin club officer, Angellena Berberich-Eerebout, “It took about a month to organize and find club members who would bring in food, drinks, and decorations.” But all the hard work paid off. Many students stayed and enjoyed in the festivities this year instead of running off with the food.

Freshman Honors, Mid State, and All State Choir Auditions
by Paige Gawley, class of 2012
This weekend more than ten students from St. Cecilia will be trying out for the Freshman Honors, Mid State, and All State Choirs. Arabella Everly, a junior choir student who will be auditioning for Mid State this weekend, explained the event as, "a competition that you compete in to get into a large performance".
Because this is such a large event girls are working very hard to prepare. "I am singing and listening to music for three hours every night," Arabella said.
Freshman choir student Emily Humphreys said that she "practices everyday (by herself) and with Mrs. MacCallum about three days a week after school".
Being selected for any of these choirs is a big honor, both the girls are very excited.
Arabella said that she would be "really happy" to make it. "I'm really excited," Emily said, "It's kind of selective so I feel like it would be a big honor if I got selected." Good luck this weekend girls!

SCA welcomed 54 colleges for Tuesday's Red Carpet morning
by Rachel Earthman, class of 2012
SCA had representatives from 54 colleges on the campus this morning, making it the biggest Red Carpet morning to date. Tables lined Alumnae Hall, Presentation Hall, and part of the senior hallway. Students from all grades talked to representatives of colleges ranging from Aquinas College to Wofford College.
"I'm really glad SCA has Red Carpet mornings because it helps me learn more about colleges. I loved seeing so many colleges that we have opportunities to go to," said senior Lauren Cieler.
Many students could be seen with large handfulls of information and brochures from the various colleges. "It was overwhelming because there were so many more colleges than usual," said Meg Pogue."But I'm glad I got to see so many."
Red Carpet Morning is especially important for the juniors and seniors, who are already in the college process. "This college fair was really great. It helped me see where I need to be at this point in the college process," said senior Andrea Bright.

by Taylor Ely, class of 2012
Three members of the golf team achieved a close victory against Davidson Academy last night. Summer Boyd, Maggie Ward, and Abigail Dillion worked together for a final score of only 270! The golfers reported that the game was especially hard last night due to the wet grass from rainstorms earlier in the day.
Summer, one of the members who also participated in yesterday’s tournament, has been on the SCA golf team since sophomore year and absolutely loves everything about it. The team came in third place and qualified for state!

Today is the start of Red Carpet week, which is a week to help prepare students for college. This week over 100 different college and university representatives will be at
school to talk to students and for students to get an idea of what different colleges are looking for. This is a great opportunity for the girls to learn more about college and all the different college options out there.
All students and parents are welcome to attend the Catholic College Fair tonight at 6:30 p.m. in SCA's Alumnae Hall. This is an opportunity for girls to find out more about 25 different Catholic colleges from all over the country.
Senior Emily Beavers said, "I like that our school gives seniors the opportunity to meet with college reps. We can find out more about the school than what's on the website."
In support of Red Carpet Week teachers and staff wore their alma mater T-shirts today, which is a fun way for students to see where their teachers went to college and maybe even ask them particular questions on their college experiences.
(Thank you to senior journalism student, Maddie Clark, who wrote this piece for our news of the day! Maddie is Senior Edior of the yearbook, she is a member of the French club, Pep club and Art club. Maddie is also an MBA football cheerleader. Thank you, Maddie!)

Freshman/Senior Week
The annual tradition was a wonderful success! We kicked off this great week with freshmen arriving Monday morning to decorated lockers filled with treats. Students participated in a number of activities and, this year, the seniors brought back a Freshman/Senior week tradition from the 60s and 70s. Inspired by Claudia Volz Kornmeyer’s, SCA ’71, submission of her “freshman egg” signed by the Class of 1968 to the display case in Alumnae Hall, this year’s seniors provided their freshman with a hollowed out egg shells during the start of Freshman/Senior Week. The goal was for the freshmen to get each senior to sign the egg. Today, the freshmen found out who their senior is and had lunch together in the courtyard.

Lots buzzing around St. Cecilia
This Sunday kicks off the annual Freshman/Senior week. During this time, every senior "adopts" a freshman. Throughout a designated week, the seniors do fun activities for their freshmen, such as decorating lockers and leaving small notes and surprises for them. At the end of the week, the seniors sponsor a picnic at which time they reveal to "their" freshmen who they are. In recent years, the freshmen have begun a custom of reciprocating the seniors' kindness with a special week at the end of the school year.
Senior Olivia Smith went on to say, “All the seniors are so excited. I plan on spending lots of time this weekend preparing the locker decorations and, of course, SCArab themed treats! Freshman/Senior week is a wonderful St. Cecilia tradition. ”

Principal's Corner
Sister Mary Thomas, O.P.
As we begin this school year, we have been talking about the concept of community and what it means to be a member of a community. Catholic schools as communities were founded so that young people would have a place to learn and grow in a culture that could fully admit their divine destiny. St. Cecilia Academy exists for this mission for the young women of Middle Tennessee. The first step for the girls to enter fully into this community is by being themselves and sharing themselves. This was one of the themes of freshman overnight, but we could extend the same invitation to our older students and all of our families. Our school community thrives on students and parents alike getting involved, offering talents to the service of the community. Your daughters will have this opportunity at the activities fair next week. You will have the opportunity to get involved, if you are not yet, at the Parents' Nights, Sept. 8 (Junior/Senior) and 13 (Freshman/Sophomore). I encourage you to put your name on the dotted line or say “Yes” if a parent coordinator calls. For more than 150 years and counting, this year promises to be one of the brightest ever for St. Cecilia Academy.
Additional news of the day:
Today’s Mass was offered to Mrs. Jocelyn Hardwicke Cross, SCA Class of 1930. She first came to St. Cecilia Academy when she was six years old and today lives in California. Mrs. Cross has been a faithful alumna all of these years with support and generous giving!

The SCA volleyball, soccer and cross country teams were listed in today's Tennessean as "state contenders" in their respective divisions this fall.

Fun-filled weekend of leadership and sisterhood
We packed the busses Friday afternoon and our student leaders, faculty and staff members headed to Camp Hillmont for the annual Leadership Workshop.
"Saturday morning each club presented its plans and ideas for the new school year," said Mrs. Honeycutt, Director of Student Activities. She went on to say, "I was so impressed with their creativity and their 'ready-to-tackle-anything' attitudes." Senior class sponsor, Mrs. Connolly said college was a hot topic among the Class of 2012 students during the workshop. As the college counselor, she was excited to hear the girls say "I can hardly wait to get started on my applications!"
Sunday afternoon came and so did each new SCA freshman. Our senior leaders arranged themselves and our new students into seasonal themed groups. The two-day annual Freshman Overnight could not have been better organized.
"The faculty and staff witnessed outstanding leadership from our seniors." Mrs. Honeycutt continued to say, "I'm so looking forward to working with our new freshmen students. They jumped into every activity with enthusiasm and fantastic attitudes. They have already bonded so well as a class."
