Learning that extends beyond the walls of the classroom always takes on an added dimension of freshness and immediacy. Every January, St. Cecilia offers a week-long Interim Program, an opportunity for students to explore non-traditional learning options through travel, internships, or the acquiring of various skills to which they may not otherwise be exposed.
Travel
Different trips are offered every year, usually lasting between seven to ten days. Past trips have featured rambles about King Arthur’s England as well as the bright lights of the London stage, immersion in the language and culture of Paris, exposure to the art of Florence and Rome, introduction to New York City’s theaters, and opportunities to attend service trips to New Orleans’ French Quarter. Trips are generally open to juniors and seniors.
Internships
Junior and senior girls have the chance to explore career possibilities by interning with a professional in their field of interest. While shadowing a doctor, teacher, interior designer, lawyer, musician, or research scientist, students receive up-close exposure to different careers and learn all about the "real world." Students keep learning logs of their experiences.
On–campus Courses
A heavy load of academic courses during the school year does not always allow for the exploration of non-traditional activities, so Interim provides an opportunity for freshmen and sophomores to learn skills that enhance their personal growth. Course offerings vary each year, but classes like cake decorating, rock climbing, psychology, pottery, and CPR training are always full. In addition, all freshmen take “The Art of Living Graciously,” a seminar on the finer points of manners, dress, and the unique heritage of St. Cecilia.
