St. Cecilia Academy 150th Anniversary   1860 - 2010

The founding of St. Cecilia Academy was simultaneous with the founding of The Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation. At the request of Bishop James Whelan, also a Dominican, four sisters from Somerset, Ohio, came to establish an Academy for the higher education of young women in the Diocese of Nashville, in August of 1860. Classes opened in October on a hill in North Nashville known as Mount Vernon Gardens.

The Congregation will celebrate its 150th Jubilee year by observing 150 hours of adoration in June and hold a Jubilee Mass and Dinner June 25, 2009. The Nashville Symphony will perform a concert on the Motherhouse lawn June 26 at 7 p.m. Visit the St. Cecilia congregation Web site for more information.
